Students in grades 4-8 are invited to participate in the extra-curricular Chess Club at St. James School. Chess Club generally meets immediately after school. Any student in these grades who understand the basic concepts of the game is invited to join.  Students will be paired together with others of closely matched skill levels or may be taught skills in the beginning of the school year.

The goal for the year will be to increase all students' understanding and enjoyment of the game of chess.  Beginners will focus on learning the rules of the game.  More advanced players will study basic tactical principles and checkmating themes.  A healthy attitude of competitiveness will be promoted by encouraging the students to play and learn from one another.
